CRAFT A WITCH HAT FASCINATOR

Updated: Oct 19, 2022

We get a lot of trick-or-treaters in our neighborhood. After decorating the house and getting the kids decked out, it takes a lot of energy to dress up yourself. A witchy English-style hat is the perfect solution for a low-key Halloween costume! Print the pieces on black cardstock, and a band on a coordinating color, and you are on your way. In addition to the PDF for hand cutting, we have included .svg files for those with a cutting machine. Get crafting!

MAKE A WITCH FASCINATOR AND SUNGLASSES

MATERIALS

Black cardstock and a coordinating Halloween colorwe sourced ours at Paper Source

Scissors and/or craft knife

Craft glue

Scoring tool

Colored cellophane sheets

Black headbands

INSTRUCTIONS

1. Download the Witch Fascinator and Witch Sunglasses PDFs.

If using a cutting machine, download the .svg files (Cut out the pieces and jump down to the assembly instructions.).

2. Print the hat and glasses sheets onto black heavy-weight paper. Print the band onto heavy-weight paper in a coordinating color. Ensure that you are printing at 100% scale.

ASSEMBLING THE HAT

1. Cut out the Hat Brim, Hat Cone, and Hat Band. Use a craft knife to cut out all the interior shapes on Hat Brim. Score the dashed lines on Hat Cone.

TIP: If you are cutting the pieces by hand do the work in a well-lit area as the cutting lines will be easier to see on the black paper.

2. Wrap Hat Cone around a cylinder to make the paper more pliable. We used a pepper grinder.

3. Add adhesive to the darkened tab on Hat Cone.

4. Wrap the opposite edge around, forming a cone, and secure to the tab.

5. Slide the small tabs on Hat Cone through the two large openings on Hat Brim. Glue the tabs down.

6. Add adhesive to the darkened tab on Hat Band. Loop the opposite end around and secure to the tab.

7. Slide Hat Band over the tip of Hat Cone, pushing the band downward, and secure.

8. To finish the fascinator, thread the headband through the small half-moon openings underneath Hat Brim.

ASSEMBLING THE SUNGLASSES

1. Cut out the Glasses Front, two Temples, and the two Glasses Backs. Use a craft knife to cut out all the interior ovals on Glasses Front and Glasses Backs (save two). Score the dashed lines on Glasses Front.

2. The cellophane is flimsy and difficult to cut nicely. A suggestion is to tape two of the central ovals to the cellophane sheet. Offset your scissors a bit when cutting so that the cellophane oval is larger than the opening on the glasses.

3. Glue the cellophane ovals to the backside of Glasses Front. Then adhere the two Glasses Backs to the backside of Glasses Front, sandwiching the cellophane inside.

4. Lastly adhere the two Temples, or side arms, to Tabs A and B on Glasses Front.
